Swimming Carnival

8/02/2012
The Evening of Wednesday 8 Feburary 2012 saw the annual Southport State High School Twilight Swimming Carnival take place. The event takes place in the grounds of our own school pool and is always an aquatic spectacular worthy of much celebration. This year saw one for the ages with a new, slightly left field, relay structure introduced just about every student present. The basic concept was that each team of infinite numbers and over a period of ten minutes get as many swimmers down the twenty five metre pool as possiable.

The result was hundreds of students swimming one after the other down the pool. A great turnout ensured that this relay was a massive hit with both teachers and students alike. Indeed some of the 'students' getting down the pool looked somewhat older than sixteen and under. in the end the relay scores were incredibly close with Bribie getting 135 laps of the pool, Stradbroke managed 171 laps, Karragarra 175 and mighty Moreton a whopping 179 laps!

In terms of the more traditionally competitive events, a fantastic turnout from grade eight, ten and twelve meant that the thirteen years, fifteen year and open division were tightly contested. The blue ribbon events of the fifty metre freestyle were close fought battleswith each competitor giving it their all. with the introduction of an underwater camera this year we all look forward to reliving some of the races from a more submerged perspective, a big thanks to the Film & Media Dept for the extra effort.

While the carnival results are not yet officially released, hourable mentions go out to Zada Wright, Jennifer Masters, Hannah Rodwell, Laura Schouten, Brittney Morris, Randy Gonzalez, Kai Edwards, Jordan Stocker-Hoida, Chris Jackson and Harley Gonzalez. In our next whole school assembly, offical presentations of age champions and aggregate team champions will be announced.
