Showcase Awards for 2012

Southport State High School has begun a reading revolution in high school. Traditionally, reading is not explicitly taught after primary school, but every day in every high school student learning is centred around reading text to gain knowledge.
The reading riot initiative is challenging our school community to rethink the role reading plays in learning from Year 8 to Year 12. Teachers are now using the language of reading to allow students to make the link between what they need to know and what they read.
Students can now apply a range of reading strategies and explain how to hold on to their thinking when they read to learn.  In recognition on this, the Reading Riot initiative is a State Finalist in the Showcase Awards for 2012.
