Science as a ‘way of knowing’ is used by people to explore and explain their experiences of phenomena of the universe. Science is part of the human quest for understanding and wisdom and reflects human wonder about the world.
Years 8 and 9 course structure (excluding Electives) contains three courses of study: • Gateway Science program structured to assist students with learning and understanding fundamental science concepts • Core Science program • PACE Science program structured to offer more opportunities for students to extend their study of Core Science program concepts.
Both the PACE and Gateway classes are fluid and require review at the end of each semester based on student progress and participation.
The following five strands of study are covered: • Science & Society • Earth & Beyond • Energy & Change • Life & Living • Natural & Processed Materials.
Core Science program provides multiple pathways to various science electives in Year 9 and Year 10.
Students may elect to take as many semester units of Science as they wish in their program. It is a requirement of Southport SHS that students choose at least 1 Science elective in the 3 semesters in years 9 or 10. Students however should try to match their academic and motivational abilities with the modules they choose.
