Physical Education Subject Offerings
Sports Facilities
The school has a new indoor sports stadium, with a fully equipped weight gym, supervised at lunchtimes and open to all students. This excellent indoor facility is complemented by an outdoor 25m pool, tennis courts, volleyball courts, basketball courts and two sports ovals as well as direct canoe access to the Broadwater.
Year 8
All Year 8 students at Southport State High School study Physical Education for a semester. The program is very diverse and aimed at providing a range of different physical experiences. Students do one lesson of circus each week under the instruction of the Trix Circus company. Students learn a variety of circus acts including:- juggling, hoola hoops, mini tramp, trapeze, tight rope. Students will also participate in:- aquatics, athletics, modified games, team sports, gym training, fitness testing and human relations education.
Year 8 Sport Excellence Basketball Class
 Gifted sports students are able to apply to be in the Sports Excellence Basketball Class. Students need not necessarily have a strong basketball background , but rather a love of sport combined with a good work ethic and keenness to learn. Basketball Excellence is studied as a subject for three 70 minute periods per week. Students who want to apply for the Sport Excellence Basketball Class need to:
- Provide a sports reference letter at their enrolment interview. (Letter from PE teacher, Sports Coach, etc.)
- Attend the try-outs at the Yr 7 Orientation day in November.
Sports Excellence Rugby League Class
 Gifted sports students are able to apply to be in the Sports Excellence Rugby League Class. Students need not necessarily have a strong Rugby League background , but rather a love of sport combined with a good work ethic and keenness to learn. Rugby League Excellence is studied as a subject for three 70 minute periods per week. Students who want to apply for the Sport Excellence Basketball Class need to:

Years 9 & 10
Physical Education Strand
Physical Education electives are designed to cater for students who enjoy sport and who are also academically inclined. Students will usually do 2 practical lesson and 1 theory lesson a week.
Sports Excellence Strands Basketball - Touch - Volleyball - Rugby League
The Sports Excellence electives are designed to cater for students who want to specialise in a particular sport. Students will undertake an intensive study of a sport and develop their skills, fitness and strategic knowledge.
Recreation Strand
 Recreation electives are designed to cater for students who enjoy sport but are not overly academically inclined. Students will usually do 2 practical lesson and 1 theory lesson a week.
Years 11 & 12
OP Strand — Physical Education
Non-OP Strand — Certificate II in Sport & Recreation
High performance sports program
The school highlighted a need for a program that mentors young athletes and encourages them to strive to reach the elite level in their chosen sport whilst ensuring that they are still able to balance this with their school work load.
High performance sports program offers our gifted sports stars:
- access to a sports mentor
- two months free speed and power training with Acceleration Australia
- aassessment by a sports podiatrist
- an injury management lecture from a sports physiotherapist
- fitness testing
- motivational talks from elite athletes
- assistance with personal weight training programs in our school gym
- liaison with coaches to oversee any training programs that they have set
Applications can be made through the Head of Department and will be subject to approval.
