Physical Education Faculty

The Physical Education Faculty is divided into three broad strands...

  • Physical Education
The PE electives (shown in the PE Strand below) are designed to cater for students who enjoy sports and who are also academically inclined. Therefore the theory covered will gradually build in complexity, as will the assessment tasks. Students will usually do 2 practical and 1 theory lesson per week. All of the units below will develop in students the skills required to undertake OP subjects in years 11 & 12.
  • Sports Specialisation
The Sports Specialisation strand is comprised of electives that are designed to cater for students who want to specialise in a particular sport. Students will undertake and intensive study of a sport and develop their skills, fitness and strategic knowledge. It would be expected that these students also play this sport in the interschool sport competition. All of the units below will develop in students the ability required to undertake OP or REC subjects in years 11 & 12.
  • Recreational Studies
The REC electives (listed in the REC Strand below) are designed for students who enjoy sports but are not academically inclined. Therefore the theory work covered will be of a much less academic nature with fairly simple assessment tasks. Students will usually do 2 practical and 1 theory lesson per week. The skills developed in the units below will prepare students for NON-OP subjects in years 11 & 12.

Year 8
All year 8 students at Southport State High School must study one semester of Health and Physical Education. Durig this semester the students will explore the areas of Physical Skill Development through participating in a weekly cirucs class with qualified cirucs instructors as well as participating in minor games, athletics, swimming and team sports. Students will also develop their own personal Fitness Profile and learn about fitness testing and the component of fitness. Students will participate in a number of Human Relationships Education classes that focus on human sexuality and puberty, smoking and other teen issues. This approach is aimed at giving students a well rounded insight into their own total health status.

Years 9 & 10
These years choose an elective each semester. It is important to note that students to have to stay with just one of the strands of PE offered below. For example, a student may study a Sports Specialisation elective and a PE elective during the same semester. Students would however, be discouraged from studying all 3 strands in a semester. Students should try to match their academeic abilities and motivation with the strands they chose.
